In his earlier years, Cloud left Nibelheim to join SOLDIER in order to impress Tifa--only to fail and become a mere Infantryman for Shinra. The two have worked together in AVALANCHE and battled alongside one another in their efforts to save the Planet.
In the aftermath of the events following the Meteor, Cloud has lived alongside with Tifa at the 7th Heaven, where she runs the bar and he works the Strife Delivery Service.
